Daylight savings time is upon us, and you know what that means — it’ll start getting dark an hour earlier, but at least we get an extra hour of sleep after all those Halloween parties! In honor of the annual event we bring you a quiz that falls back (pun intended) on timepieces and symbols of passing time. Can you match these photographers names to the images below?
1. Laurie Simmons
2. Steven Meisel
3. William Abranowicz
4. Ellen von Unwerth
The name Frida Gustavsson was on the tip of everyone’s tongue during this past fashion week. There seemed to always be an air of excitement and wonder surrounding the mere mention of her name, and the lucky few who had seen her only amplified the mystique. Now that the frenzy of the S/S 2010 shows is behind us, we finally had the chance to meet the young muse.
Our initial impression? We get the hype! At an astounding 6 feet tall, Frida’s classical grace, perfectly symmetrical features, aloof presence and incredible sense of style served to impress us all the more. And tender at the age of 16, we can only imagine how beautiful (and tall!) she’ll grow to be!
Have you ever wondered what usage fees might be like for a campaign running in the US, Europe, Asia and on the Moon? If you have, then you may already be familiar with talent releases that allow usage to be “edited, in all media, throughout the universe, in perpetuity.” If this is news to you, then it’s time to get your head out of the sand and embrace the future: The Galactic Digital Age!
Thanks to the clever lawyers who have their sights set on the future, many contracts now cover potential usage rights not only on planet Earth, but throughout our galaxy and until the end of time. We enjoyed reading the The Wall Street Journal article on this subject during our morning commute, and we highly recommend you read it! While we don’t foresee much potential advertising revenue in the Milky Way in the near future, who knows what opportunities are floating out there in the zero-gravity zone.

NGC 281, AKA The Pacman Nebula, is a star-forming nebula approximately 9,500 light-years away. Perhaps one day it will be a focal point for ad reach!
While we’ve never physically sat down to make a list of all the elements we love to see in a fashion editorial, Hedi Slimane’s shoot in the September issue of AnOther Man won us over. The story incorporates many of our favorite visual details which include: Hedi’s signature black and white photography, shots taken from below, superhero poses, vast skies and a male model with whom we’d love to spend a night on the town. We especially love the abstraction of the last shot.
Yulia K signed with Women back in 2007 and has been a leader of the runway pack ever since. In her first season alone she walked for Lanvin, Margiela, Issey Miyaki and more. She has strong yet graceful features and a look that has remained striking from season to season. Even though her fall on the S/S 2009 Prada runway garnered a fair bit of attention (although everyone will now agree those shoes were treacherous!), Yulia went on to secure solid bookings for the seasons after. We chose two of our favorite looks from her S/S 2010 resume for this week’s Realway vs. Runway. Which of her looks do you like most?
If you are half as excited for Halloween 2009 as we are, you will no doubt be discussing your plans and readying your costume throughout the week. We just came across a video shot by a friend of ours for one of our favorite NYC stores Oak. We love the creative, oh-so-fashionable take on this spooky holiday!
With the imminent doom of daylight savings time and the simple fact that our days will be shorter and darker for months to come, we are beginning to feel like we need to take matters into our own hands and find ways to celebrate and brighten life up a bit. We are seriously considering the advice of the LES gypsy-punk band Gogol Bordello to “start wearing purple” because you know what? Purple is a color that screams: “Look at me! I am bold! I am brave and I am cool enough to pull off purple!” Who knows, we might just throw in a little pink to spice things up even more.
Lakshmi Menon is a supermodel. What makes us say this? Well, there are a number of factors at play. Not only does the Goa, India native have top-notch campaigns and magazine covers in her book, she also conveys the persona of a gorgeous, strong, glamorous, independent woman. Lakshmi came by our offices recently for a go-see and we were immediately impressed by her professional demeanor and strong presence. As you can imagine, her pose in every shot was perfection.
The new Zac Posen campaign features just the right balance of vampy seduction and feminine prowess. With Ellen von Unwerth behind the camera, Coco Rocha working it in front of the camera, and stellar makeup by Francelle, we wouldn’t have it any other way. We love the saturated color and high drama of the campaign, especially the shot of Coco working the spotlight!
Patricia van der Vliet is the newest addition to the NY Models roster, and we must say she is quite special. Her Dutch name, which translates into English as “Patricia of the brook,” describes her perfectly — a refreshing, spritely beauty. Her crystal clear blue eyes and gorgeous pout only add to her nymph-like appearance.
Judging from the long list of shows she has completed this season, we can’t help but say “that seat’s on fire!” We are greatly impressed with all of her runway feats this season, and if we could ask her a single question, it would be whether the 5-piece wig headdress she donned for the Louis Vuitton show was as heavy as it looks. What do you think of her runway looks?
