Laughing and Living

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Life is just a bowl of cherries
So live and laugh, aha!
Laugh and love
Live and laugh,
Laugh and love,
Live and laugh at it all!

QUIZ ANSWERS

Monday, March 30th, 2009

It’s Monday, so that means it’s time to reveal the answer to Friday’s Photo Pop Quiz!

As most of our quiz-takers guessed, the answer is A! However, only a few were able to correctly attribute the image to David LaChapelle. Congratulations!

PHOTO POP QUIZ

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Among the motifs photographers use to give a girl an edgy look, few are more timeless and iconic than a car. An image of a girl and a car is definitely a symbol of strength and independence, whether she’s stepping out of the passenger seat, at the wheel, or coolly lounging on the hood!

Ellen von Unwerth is certainly one of the best known photographers to immortalize cool, independent women, so we found a few of our favorite photos by her for this week’s POP QUIZ. One of the photos below was not shot by Ellen: can you spot the image and name it’s true author?

“Growth and Despair/Deer Beds”

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

As you may have noticed, we at PRODn are passionate about photography! From editorials to gallery openings, flickr to museum exhibitions, we’ll take a look at just about any picture you put in front of us. Since we happen to work during normal business hours, however, we rarely get to check out gallery shows sans opening night crowds.

That’s why we love the website Women in Photography. Dedicated to showcasing new work by female photographers, the site is almost like an art gallery, except entirely online! It features a new body of work every two weeks, and the range of projects featured so far is impressively broad.

For the next two weeks, Women in Photography is featuring a project by none other than Katherine Wolkoff. Entitled, “Growth and Despair/Deer Beds,” the series juxtaposes images of deer beds made in New England in 2007 with images of abandoned or empty lots in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans, made in 2008. Of the body of work Katherine says, “Each time I came upon a [deer] bed it felt as if the deer had just departed, leaving a warm impression in the grass… The pictures in New Orleans also follow the traces of an absent population, barely visible through the ruins left behind. Both bodies of work quietly embody the absence of a recently departed presence.”

Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

After her stunning debut on COACD in January, we had been looking forward to spotting Rose Cordero in several of the European shows. This 17 year-old from the Dominican Republic turned out to be one of the most elusive models of the past season. After much anticipation, we were happy to see Rose in the Burberry and Louis Vuitton shows! We were thrilled when Rose came by our offices the other day, and wanted to share her go-see with you. We can’t wait to see Rose blossom in coming seasons!

THE RETURN OF THE MALE SUPERMODEL

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Male models are all too often forgotten relative to their female counterparts. However–there are a select few who live on in our memory. Who could forget the iconic DKNY ads featuring Mark Vanderloo which covered NYC in the late 90s and catapulted him to superstardom? Remember when he was the male half of fashion’s first couple?

Hedi Slimane appears to have a soft spot for male models who were huge in the 1990s. In his recent Vogue Homme International Editorial we get a contemporary look at some of our old favorites.  The black and white images feature Mark Vanderloo, Werner Schreyer, Andree Van Noord, Greg Hansen, and Larry Scott and are paired with an update on what these guys have been doing since we last saw them. Their stories follow a familiar theme: a young boy straight out of school — trying to find his place — gets swept away in the world of modeling before inevitably settling back down.

Hedi delivers intimate portraits of the worlds most beautiful boys — now grown into men.

There she was

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

With Spring in the air (even though it’s still chilly out) and the bulk of art fairs now over, we are making plans to hit the streets and attend some gallery openings and art events!

We’ll keep you posted on future events we are excited about, one of which is next week’s book signing by the artist Collier Schorr. The book is a compilation of drawings and photographs from her 2007 exhibition “There I Was” at 303 Gallery, in which Schorr utilized historical source material to represent the story of a drag car racer named Charlie “Astoria Chas” Snyder, and his life in 1960s Long Island and Queens, NY. By employing historical records instead of her own memory to tell the “Astoria Chas” story, Schorr “examines the role of the photograph as proof of the photographer’s presence, territory and view and the difficulty of representing any past without the theatricality of re-staging it.”

If you’re a fan like us, you might catch us fighting over the last signed copy at Dashwood Books next Tuesday!

BECKoning Youth

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

There’s nothing like a catchy song and a well-choreographed music video to get us humming and tapping our feet on a Monday morning!

We are longtime fans of Beck (he had us at “Loser”), and though this video for the single “Youthless,” off his 2008 album Modern Guilt, is not brand new, it was just what we needed to start the week off on the right foot! Kris Moyes, who directed the “Youthless” video, has worked on videos for other catchy tunes by big names such as Hercules and Love Affair, Cut Copy and The Presets.

Take a look at this video and we promise you’ll be BECKoning for more!

PHOTO POP QUIZ

Friday, March 20th, 2009

One thing is certain: walking to work this morning in the wet snow was no fun whatsoever! After a beautiful spring week in NYC, we could hardly believe the nerve of the weather for dealing us such a bad hand. Luckily we peeked outside around lunchtime to see the snow had stopped, the sun was shining, and the sky was blue. We were literally jumping for joy!

Therein lies our inspiration for this week’s POP QUIZ. Photographer’s love to create images of people jumping, and we were curious to see how many different ways a photographer could shoot a great “jumping” image. Can you guess which photographer shot each image below?

Stay tuned for the answers on Monday, and remember no cheating!
